Synthetic Phonics…fast, efficient and effective
The Synthetic Phonics approach has been available for some time but it is only recently that its value has been sufficiently appreciated. The UK government has now insisted on all schools using the Synthetic Phonics for the teaching of early reading and spelling. Other governments in the rest of the English speaking world are rapidly coming to the same conclusion.
Synthetic Phonics is an awkward technical name that has nothing to do with being artificial!
It is the synthesizing or blending of phonemes (sounds) to make a word and enable children to read. The process of reading with Synthetic Phonics involves decoding or 'breaking' words into separate phonemes that can be blended together to read a written word. On the other hand, the process of spelling requires children to identify all the phonemes in a word and then use their knowledge of the phonetic code to write or 'make' the word.
