Every Child Reading and Spelling - First Time!
|
The secret? Lots and lots of synthetic phonics practise throughout the day whilst slowly introducing comprehension skills too.
Ensure guided reading is targeted, motivating and provides lots of synthetic phonics practise and, using real books from day one!
"The children in my reception class really loved the books. They are colourful and targeted: the children really liked the fact they could read a book by themselves."
Carol Johnston, Reception Teacher, London

Mirror your Letters and Sounds teaching:
The Practice Books mirror your teaching sequence from Letters and Sounds and The Synthetic Phonics Toolkit - so if you have only taught the first 8 phonemes children will only meet words using these 8 phonemes.
Firmly embed synthetic phonics skills:
The Practice Books are the only readers which give you such an opportunity to target and practise only synthetic phonics skills; practising decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) so that these skills quickly become easy, automatic and second nature.
Introduce comprehension systematically too:
The series also systematically introduces comprehension skills; punctuation and knowledge of sentence structure. As the three series progress and children become more fluent in their decoding, they are able to put into practise both reading and comprehension skills side-by-side – but it is the Practice Books that get them reading first!
Highlight the link between reading and reading books – use real books from day one of learning to read!
The earlier children make the link between “the sounds that come out of my mouth, make up the words on that page” (Leena, aged 5) the more motivated to read they become.
Put yourself in a child’s shoes – reading a book does not mean reading 250 pages and 10,000 words – it is reading a whole book, from front to back, regardless of how many pages or how many words are included. They finish a book – they’re a real reader, even if they only know the first 8 phonemes!
Watch as Get Reading Right's Jo-Anne Dooner explains on Australian TV just how the books work and how they systematically introduce comprehension too:
