The Letters and Sounds series
Over two series the Letters and Sounds books take your children step-by-step through the phonemes and grapheme-phoneme correspondences.
Series one: basic code from phases 2 and 3, and
CVCC, CVVC and VCC words from phase 4
The progression from phase one to phase two of Letters and Sounds is demanding. Children must remember the first eight phonemes, and each of their representations, then successfully blend them together to read a word. It is crucial that there is rapid and early success so that children gain confidence from breaking the reading code.
Series one covers the basic code from phase two and three of Letters and Sounds. Four books for each group of eight phonemes means children get the much-needed early practice in blending and segmenting. Phase four Consonant - Vowel - Consonant - Consonant (CVCC), CVVC and VCC words are also covered.
Six camera books teach the first half of the irregular, high frequency words from the Letters and Sounds programme.

Series two; the advanced code from phases 3 and 5
Each book from “On My Way” covers one phoneme-grapheme representation from the advanced code taught in phases three and five. Also, six camera books teach the remaining irregular, high frequency words from the Letters and Sounds programme.
Series two now sees children reading much more challenging 3-, 4- and 5-word sentences. These books use basic punctuation and the camera words they have already learnt. Averaging 20 target phoneme words per book there is again lots of opportunity for reinforcement and practice. This series still has the same clear message: children should decode using their knowledge of phonemes as their first reading strategy.
